Belinda will provide a brief update on the changes that have occurred at ASQ Headquarters in 2017 and will discuss some ASQ initiatives that may affect the way Sections operate. She will also discuss some of the benefits of being an ASQ member and member leader

Belinda Chavez is an Operations Manager for KBRwyle Technical Solutions, LLC, in support of the NASA Safety Center Audits and Assessment Office. She has over 25 years of Safety and Quality experience. Belinda is a graduate of Louisiana Technical University with a Master of Business Administration and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology.

Belinda currently serves in a number of ASQ member leader positions: Region 14A Deputy Regional Director; multiple section positions in several sections (Nominating Committee Chair, Audit Committee Chair, VOC Chair), Education Division Past Chair; and Aviation, Space & Defense Division VOC Chair, and co-chair of the ASQ Performance Awards and Recognition (PAR) program. She previously served on the ASQ Board of Directors (2007-2012), was Section Affairs Council Chair (2010-2012), Region 14/14A Director (2007-2012), Region 14A Deputy Regional Director(2013-2015, 2017), Education Division Chair (2015-2016), Education Division Chair-
Elect (2013-2014), Aviation, Space and Defense Division VOC Chair (2013-2017), Section 1422 VOC Chair (2014-2017), and Section 1418 Nominating Committee Chair (2011-14).

Strong Root Cause Analysis / More effective Corrective Action

Tell me if this sounds familiar:

You get a customer complaint – they’ve received a defective thingy from you.

  • You go through Root Cause Analysis (RCA) – determine the problem, fix it, and notify the customer.  The customer is happy.

A few months later, the customer gets another defective thingy from you.

  • You go back through RCA, determine that it was a different Root Cause (RC), fix that, and notify the customer (again).  The customer is less happy, and a little grumbly.

A few months after that, the customer gets a third defective thingy from you. They’re really mad now, and losing confidence that you even know how to make defect-free thingys!

  • You go back a third time, find a different RC from the first two, fix that, and grovel to the customer so they won’t take their business elsewhere.  The customer is downright cranky now, and wants to implement additional controls so they don’t receive any more defective parts – at your expense, not theirs, of course.

The scenario above really happened.  The Fortune 50 company, at their wits’ end, called me in to help them fix the problem – once and for all.   They had smart engineers on the problem, so I was a bit nervous about what value I could add.  I reviewed what they did –

  • They followed all the protocols for Root Cause Corrective Action.  ✓
  • They did their analysis, and hadn’t missed any of the possible root causes. ✓
  • They fully implemented and verified the selected Corrective Action.  ✓

So – why was the problem recurring, not once, but twice??!?

I went back to the drawing board.  I went back to the training I had personally received from the great Japanese masters on how to do effective Root Cause Analysis.  I realized the step that most everyone was skipping, or rushing through…. Time and time again.  I validated that this step is the one most often overlooked.  I went back and worked with their team to implement this step better.

And I fixed the problem for the client.  Permanently.  Problem never reared its ugly head again.

And it works just as well for quality, environmental, and health and safety systems – anywhere that you need to implement permanent corrective action.

I didn’t develop a new tool.
I didn’t have breakthrough innovation.
I simply applied what my Japanese instructors told me to, with a few modern tweaks.

January Meeting – Case Study: Creating a Spare Parts Purchase List with Confidence – 01/10/18

Find out how you can save millions of dollars in having the right spares at the right time in your facility

As anyone with a hand in running a household knows, it’s important to keep a stockpile of key items. You certainly don’t want to find out the hard way that you’re on your last square of toilet paper. But in the case of a facility like a power plant, a missing spare part could be more than just a nuisance—it could be downright expensive.

Determining the appropriate spare parts to have on hand in a large facility, however, can be tricky. Most organizations deal with this in one of two ways: 1) they guess or 2) they purchase according to a spares list provided by an equipment vendor.

Through a case study, I would present how ARMS Reliability takes the guesswork out of developing a critical spares list, taking into account item costs, the likelihood of failure, lead times, downtime costs, and all other relevant factors.

In this webinar you will  learn how to define and assess the eight common types of risk in every supply chain and where you can easily get the data you need to assess those  risks. Then you will be shown how to systematically organize your risk assessment so you can prioritize your risk reduction activities.
