President & CEO, Concurrent Design, Inc.

Talk & Tour:

Concurrent Design is a complete engineering design and build resource available on a consulting basis. We provide support for any part of the product design process or the design of the manufacturing tools and systems that make those products. With core strengths in mechanical engineering and manufacturing engineering, we can apply a broad knowledge of engineering design in industrial, commercial and consumer product sectors. We have successfully applied these common core strengths in numerous industries including (alphabetically) clean energy, computers / networking / electronics, consumer products, medical / biomedical, nanotechnology, and semiconductor sectors.

We are available to assist with occasional peak workload or for long term partnering. We offer all or any portion of the engineering design and build function including industrial design (ID), conceptual development, engineering analysis, detailed design, drafting and documentation, project management, vendor sourcing, procurement services, assembly, test, debug and volume manufacturing scale-up.

Concurrent Design has been operating successfully in Austin, Texas since May, 1994. Our staff has an average related work experience exceeding 20 years. We support clients locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Our internal and external resources allow us to provide virtual mechanical and manufacturing engineering departments, to move our clients from ideas to fully developed products and volume manufacturing. Our engineering partners allow us to provide a seamless electrical engineering and software engineering solution to our clients.

Mr. Ortman is founder and president of Concurrent Design, Inc.

Concurrent Design works in the continuum from idea generation, IP development, conceptual design, engineering design, and prototyping to manufacturing scale-up. Our target sectors are focused on electronics, semiconductor, nanotechnology, clean technologies and medical products. Leveraging many years of experience in the electronics and semiconductors sectors, Concurrent Design, under Mr. Ortman’s guidance, has developed a strong portfolio in all of these sectors.

Of particular interest is the idea of “Engineering for Humankind,” and hence the interest in clean technologies (solar, wind, storage, solid state lighting, water, etc.) and medical technologies (medical and biomedical products, medical devices, and durable medical equipment).

Since 1994, Mr. Ortman has led the growth of the firm to serve start-ups through Fortune 50 clients, booking well over 1700 projects locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Prior to founding Concurrent Design, Mr. Ortman worked at IBM in Manassas, VA (semiconductor fab facilities design), Dayton, NJ (automated manufacturing systems), East Fishkill, NY (automated test equipment), and Austin, TX (semiconductor R&D, manufacturing engineering, and product development). These were all contract engineering positions. Additional work experience includes Foster Wheeler Energy Corp, Bell Aerospace and CDI Corp.

In addition, Mr. Ortman is currently active in:

  • Solar Energy Entrepreneur Network or SEEN (founder)
  • CleanTX Foundation (founding member and board of directors)
  • Solar Energy Industries Association or SEIA (member – seeking BOD seat)
  • Greater Austin Chamber Clean Energy Council (member)
  • Greater Austin Chamber Clean Energy Special Interest Group (member)
  • Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) Texas Chapter (former chairman – active member)
  • Public speaking on subjects from solar energy to product design
  • Education: New Jersey Institute of Technology, BSME
