ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Dr. W. Edwards Deming had a profound effect on the quality profession. He is the acknowledged guru who led Japan out of the darkness of war and into a brilliant industrial future with quality as its cornerstone. But did he really say it? And what did he mean when he said such things as “substitute leadership!” or “the most important things are unknown or unknowable”? These are things he wanted to teach western management, but to a large extent, they missed the point. Bill Scherkenbach, who assisted Dr. Deming on many of his 4-day workshops, will be giving a 3-Day version of his workshop.

TOPIC: “Social Responsibility & Management Systems” – a Silicon Laboratories Case Study

The link between ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or sustainability is not always clear. Practitioners may be implementing a management system based on ISO, but may not be aware of how to use sustainability metrics as a tool to demonstrate commitment to P3 (people, planet, and profits), otherwise known as the Triple Bottom Line (TBL).

This session will be presented as a case study – how Silicon Laboratories, a silicon chip producer, incorporates ISO into their sustainable practices and vice versa (sustainability into ISO) – what activities are being investigated and/or undertaken; what measures are being used to gauge progress; and what actions have been taken by management.

The focus will be on building/facilities rather than chip production, to provide a more widely applicable study that any attendee will benefit from.

Using these examples, the attendee then can examine his/her own systems, to identify and improve sustainability implementation practices.

SPEAKER BIOS:

Mary McDonald is a seasoned management systems professional who has written numerous books and articles on management systems integration and sustainability. She is CEO/CTO of McDonald Consulting Group, a firm that specializes in system implementation and improvement. She is a Senior member of ASQ and a Fellow of the International Microelectronics and Packaging Society. www.mcdcg.com

Michael Brucker is the Quality & Environmental Systems Manager of Silicon Laboratories. He is an ASQ Certified Quality Manager, Engineer, and Auditor, and is pursuing his Master of Science degree in Quality Management from Eastern Michigan University. He resides with his beautiful bride and two strapping sons in Austin TX.

Scherkenbach

TOPIC: “Demingisms”

Dr.

Deming on many of his 4-day workshops, will speak on Demingisms. Much of what Deming had to say has been misunderstood, taken out of context, or misinterpreted over time. Deming believed that management by results was wrong, but what did he say to replace it with? Did Deming ever say “if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it?” Find out at this month’s exciting meeting which brings many of Dr. Deming’s teachings to the forefront. Bill will bring along a huge collection of sound bites from his immense Deming archive and he will provide insight into Dr. Deming’s true meanings and how it applies in 2011. This will be a truly revealing, entertaining, and profound evening. Make plans to be at ACC Highland Business Center for this month’s ASQ Austin meeting on Wednesday, November 9.
