Description
ASQ Austin Section 1414 in the Fall of 2000 established the Flories Scholarship. The scholarship is named in honor of Phil Flories a long time member of ASQ, past Education Chair for the Austin section, and current instructor for selected ASQ sponsored refresher classes being offered in conjunction with the Austin Community College, (ACC). The scholarship provides financial assistance to those who are qualified. Scholarships are limited to no more than two (2) per ACC semester. The dollar amount of $500 is awarded for each scholarship.
Each application packet must include the following documentation:
1. Cover letter including:
- Applicant’s name and address
- Class being taken (CQE, CQA …)
- Class term (Fall 2001, Spring 2002, …)
- Class lead instructor’s name
- ASQ exam date
2. Receipts or confirmation letters of applicant’s participation in:
- ASQ sponsored refresher class
- ASQ exam
3. Letter of confirmation from employer of no financial support being given to applicant for attending class or letter from past employer of being unemployed.
4. W-2 or equivalent indicating applicant’s annual income of being less than $50,000.00.
No formal application form currently exists for the Flories Scholarship. One scholarship may be awarded per refresher class attended. Your application packet is to be mailed to the ASQ Austin Section 1414 Certification Chair for Executive Committee review.

The Austin ASQ Section 1414 Executive Committee reviews each scholarship application for approval at their monthly meetings. Typically, checks are awarded the following month at the regularly scheduled ASQ Section 1414 meetings. Please contact your class instructor if you are currently attending a class and are interested in applying for this scholarship.
Flories Scholarship Requirements
- The applicant must be an ASQ member in good standing.
- If employed:
- The applicant is not getting any financial support for attending class from their employer.
- If unemployed:
- The applicant must not have full-time employment as of the date of application or start of class (whichever is later) and must not have any current job offers for full-time employment.
- The applicant must be actively seeking work.
- The applicant may have no other sources of income, but interim income and unemployment compensation are acceptable provided total income for the year in which the application is received does not exceed $50,000.
- The section may add any other criteria in addition to these as deemed necessary by the section.
